Database Development
No matter what your business, there is always a need to store and easily reference information. While it
is possible to keep all this information in paper form, the most efficient and functional solution is a
database. Databases provide an easy means of creating cross-referenced data tables for storing, computing,
and analyzing related and non-related information.
Databases can take many forms but we specialize in 3 areas of database creation:
Microsoft Excel:
While not an optimal database environment, Excel can be a good solution for those on a
limited budget. Excel functions and macros can be used to create most the functionality seen in more
robust databases, but in a format that is readily accessible to most users. Databases created in Excel
will require Microsoft Excel to be installed on the machine being used to open the database.

Microsoft Access:
Access was designed as a true database environment with ease of use and development in mind. Access
databases provide an all-in-one solution with tables, queries, and forms all included in a single Access
application. Access does not require the use of a separately designed and implemented front-end (i.e. web
application), but can easily be integrated into a new or existing website. An Access database would be
the easiest solution for small businesses that do not wish to develop a full web application or do not
have the resources to provide a database server. Databases created in Access require Microsoft Access to
be installed on the machine being used to open the database.

MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server:
MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server are database engines in the truest form. Once installed on a database
server, both these server applications handle database transactions more efficiently than the previously mentioned
database environments. Both these databases will require the creation of a front-end application for
updating and displaying data stored in the database. This will usually take the form of a web application.
Most (not all) website will use MySQL, as it is an open-source database and does not require the heavy
initial investment that Microsoft SQL Server requires. Microsoft SQL Server is more common in Windows
based intranet environments where Microsoft Windows servers are already in place. All websites hosted by
Methodical Creations run on MySQL. Databases created in MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server with a web
application being used as the front end are accessible to all machines with a web browser. No special
software installation or software license is required.
